So I have been down the track of making pine lure as can be seen below in pic with a epic paint failure problem. I had sum success with the lures (few small barra ) but the paint cracked and peeled. With weeks leave coming up and sum serious fishing time booked in I made few more up to trial over the week . This time round I sealed them up first before priming with etexlite . Will I run into more dramas even when sealed up first ???
I live remote so getting cedars etc is not a easy option hence why im trying pine again. Bloody addictive past time nearly as bad as fishing |

a lot of times when you buy radiata pine its still green and needs time to dry out properly, you could try some old pieces it might help, failing that seal it with fibreglass resin

Hi Curt, What Chris said exactly. Any older DRIER timbers would be preferable to new pine. The etex should seal ok ,couple of coats might be the go. Cheers Richard.

it seems like maybe the wood wasn't completely dry. maybe? I had problems in my start of this past-time, my woods were still too green. only real solution is to ensure wood has sat around long enough in a dry space, really. I cut most all of the wood I use, out in the bush. I leave it sit for at least a year or more.
something else I started doing, to try to deal with the issue of wood being too green, was I would coat with a wood hardener, prior to priming. it kind of did two things at once, drying out/hardening the wood and also sealing it somewhat, prior to the painting. since I started doing all this, and mainly just ensuring that I am not using any green wood, I haven't had any of my earlier issues. |

For those interested the weeks gone and done and have tested couple pine lures , I mainly used the one lure over the week and am happy to say no problems arose with the pine timber. The one lure in the photo had fair work out over 4 day period caught dozen or so barra to 870. So thanks for the advice it appears sealing lure first with etexlite may done the trick

Nice fish! Sealing with
Etex may assist, I'd do one coat of thinned to get it to soak right in then
another of unthinned, light sand with steel wool and then prime. Pine is
renowned for turning to shite once water gets to it, slightest scratch to the
outer layers that allow water in and it swells and starts to lift the paint, same if
the timber has a poofteenth of moisture in it before painting it will find its
way out. Moisture….. the one reason I don't use pine……
