Ted, looks a lot like Hairy Oak, which by the way likes growing on steep rocky ridges.....I'd say the same stuff. like you say its hard, but OH SO NICE in figure and colour.

Looks like what we call "She Oak" down here in Vict. Also called Lace She Oak. I have made a couple of nudes that look great but swim like a rock.

Buloke or Bull-oak = Allocasuarina luehmannii

I call it hairy oak also and I find a good place to find it is on hard dry sandridge country in Northern NSW  .
The big problem I find is it splits wildly after it is cut so its a good idea to paint the cut ends with some old paint.Hard as the proverbial bulls forehead though.Haven't used it for lures yet but will certainly try it now. Mainly use it for things like this .Note for communion use only
