Hey i'm a young fisher just getting started in making my own lures. I have made some lure and painted them i'm just wondering what sort of products that can be found locally (places like bunnings) that i could use to clear coat my lures to protect them. I'm looking for a cheap option.
Any help is greatly appreciated

So are you looking for brush on, dip or spray options? |

Are there any benefits towards one option or negatives to one?

There is a product at Bunnings called Feast Watson Liquid glass. Its a 2 pak finish, brush on. Gavin from OCD lures uses it, brush on and hang up till it drys from the nose. In the rear hook hanger add a small wire for the drips of the epoxy to gather when it drains to the bottom. I bought it but have never tried it as I spray my lures.
I tried a 2 part epoxy clear recently I bought on ebay, its good. If the lures are for personal use for yourself you can always use araldite, its a 2 part epoxy. Rub it on with a finger tip or brush it. Others may comment, I know some used a certain type of vanish from Bunnings and dip and hang their lures.. |

so many options Ben.
use what ever product is in your budget, work out what you want over time and go from there. I have used cheap spray cans for clear, also marine varnish, timber floor varnish, etc etc. all do the job and will look good and get you out fishing. experiment with what you can afford now, and if you feel the need to experiment, or improve, keep trying. end of the day fish wont care what you use if you put your lure in the right spot at the right time. Good luck and most of all enjoy it for yourself, and dont try to impress the world.. just impress yourself. Cheers Nicho

Some of the polyeurothane clears can be thinned with turps and sprayed...works alright.

I've been experimenting with Urethane Glues - like Purebond or the equivalent from Bunnings. You can buy it in little 150ml (?) tubes. It gives an incredibly glossy, hard and waterproof finish. It is moisture cured. The trick is to apply it by finger (in a glove or it will turn your finger black). I use just a dab and apply it as thin as possible - barely a smear. It is very sticky. I then breath over the surface to activate the curing. It will not run. Practice on some dud lures or sample boards because its taken me a while to get it thin enough to prevent it from foaming (where it is too thick). I haven't perfected it yet but I will persist. Has anyone else tried this? Oh the draw back is if you do get some foaming you have an area of tiny bubbles that are also "...incredibly glossy, hard and waterproof" - a real bugger to sand.
