I did wonder if any of the 'Cod' lures would surface after all these years - nice colour and still in mint condition!. I started making the 'Cod' a couple of years before I left Tenterfield, which would make Tony's lure about 15-16 years old. It was a great lure for throwing at cod in the shallower holes of the Deepwater River, Tenterfield Creek, Mole River and the Severn River.
I had a look through my old lures and found two 'Cod' lures, from my Tenterfield days. The 'rough' flouro yellow lure (painted by Darren Mitten) caught my heaviest yellowbelly - a 15lb fish, caught in the Deepwater River. The mottled green/yellow 'Cod' is a lure that I made last year.
For about the past 12 months, or so, I've been toying with making some of the old lures, from the Tenterfield days - sort of a retro collection. Below are 3 lures that I've started to make. Time is the only limiting factor, at this stage. When I catch up on all of the orders, and get some free time, I'll try to knock out a few sets.
For now, it's back to the shed to work on the 2011 Kads.

Thanks Travers for that info, Mate unfortunately that mint Blue one of your is not mine Just thought i would show a pic of your old work which is nice when you have it in your hand. Great size yella gut on that early lure Travers but gotta say I like the Yellow / Black stripe lure better for looking at Put me down for a set of your older style lures Travers I like them. Why did you change from the Soldered tow point for the Backward Bibbed lure of yours in the picture ?

Nice lures. The Cod lure looks like it started out upside down and you turned it. Have you tried the lure like that (belly up before cutting the bib slot)

G'day Alistair. No, the lure's not upside down. The actual shape came from a diagram in a Qld Fishing Monthly (don't tell Boothy ). I just dug out the original article and the date suggests that the lure originated somewhere around 1992.
Pretty obvious why I called the lure, "Cod'.
@ Tony. The Duo-lock clip is there because the bib is fairly short and it's hard to make short soldered tow wires OR I'm just a bit slack! OK, I'll make traditional, soldered tow wires for them .
Here's a couple of 'oldies' that were made in Tenterfield - predecessors of the other lures, above. I wish I kept more of them.
The top, single hook lure (yes, it has a soldered tow wire!) is actually my Tiny Digger (which I don't make anymore) with the bib shoved up it's arse - reverse psychology!
Cheers

Found a photo of the dirty old Yellowbelly that I caught on the flouro yellow 'Cod' lure. It has 1992 written on the back of the photo. Given that the article was published in October 1991 and the fish was caught in 1992, there's a good chance that the 'Cod' lure started life toward the end of 1991 or the beginning of 1992.
This was the first, and last, big yellowbelly that I ever tried to eat! Massive amounts of fat!

Not to many posts regarding your older lures Travers.
Great looking old lure.
And don't knock the Yellowbelly for the fat, the guy holding the fish was carrying a few pounds back then to.
Might be the bad camera angle ?? wide angle lens ???

Agree Thommo, Travers old lure are great works of art, but you're the one that mentioned the Wide Angle lens not me Also I reckon Travers was a trend setter with the colour of the car in the back ground, have not seen one like that for some time now. And on the Old lures I would only like one if it had a Soldered tow wire on it.

@ Brett. Who are you calling fat? That's not fat, just body ballast, to compensate for my skinny legs! No chance of that shirt fitting me now
@ Tony. The lemon coloured Rodeo twin cab was the colour to own, if you were serious about your fishing. Well, it was my first twin cab and it was easy to lift the tinny onto.
I named those other 2 old lures - at last (Harry will be proud of me!)

Travers you must be busy mate, no soldered tow points on those lures on the left Is there a story to the MOLE naming of the lure ? When you are bored travers see if you can make a Larger COD lure and see what it looks like I reckon it would be awesome.

Tony, you'll be pleased to know that I fitted soldered tow wires to the lures tonight.
The MOLE R lure is named after the Mole River, near Tenterfield, where I did a lot of my cod fishing.
The 'reversed Tiny Digger' lure is named BOB after a really good fishing mate, my father-in-law, and also because it describes what the lure does when it lands on the water, prior to retrieve. The bib points straight down, with bum up, bobbing on the surface.
Not too sure about the upsized COD lure. I'm struggling to find time to fill the lure ordrers, now. Maybe, if I find some time, I may see what I can do.
Cheers

Yep. That's the Cod, in the bottom left of photo. Painted in a deadly bass lure colour, which looks like an olive type colour but is actually yellow with black bars, then lightly overspayed with black. My Macleay Minnows in that colour are deadly on bass.

"This was the first, and last, big yellowbelly that I ever tried to eat! Massive amounts of fat!"
1 tip given to me by an old bushie angler, if the Yella is over 1.2kg/2lb from a dam, bake it whole, stand it up with the belly flaps spread on a wire rack and the fat will percolate down and rest in the bottom of the baking tray. it works My hint... DO NOT DO THIS ON A MUDDY RIVER FISH!!!! the mud makes the whole damn thing taste like crud. Also if you filet the fish and put it in the freezer for 10 mins it will set the fat and you can strip the worst off the spine & belly areas. |

G'day Brett. Good to see you on LureLovers . great to hear that you've still got a "Cod" lure.
Taught that boy everything he knows. Poor bugger had no chance in life, with me as his teacher .
@ Darby. The yellowbelly, up to about 2kg, were OK out of the Tenterfield streams. The 15 lb fish was a great lesson in what not to eat. One of the cleaners, at Tenterfield High School, told me that she preferred Yellowbelly that were bigger than 20lb. Yep 20lb!! She used to fillet them and soak them in vinegar, overnight.
Cheers

I'll look forward to that, Brett. Got a few rough mates who need to visit Tenterfield Cod country. Maybe, I should start carving them a "Cod' lure to inspire them.
