well ive been thinking of a dedicated flathead lure for a while so carved a few up to try on them.
I decided to use the same shape as i use for my "martins minnow" just a bit smaller (see top photo).Ive decided on a bib tow set up because i'm playing with a new bib shape to give it a different action to the Martins(Martins minnow was developed for north Queensland fish ) anyhow see how we go!

so we carved these guys out of huon pine put in eyelets sealed and undercoated them

next a light sand with 600 wet and dry then a basecoat of red.The reason for the red is that when the lure gets scratched by fish it'll look a bit like blood

then i just painted the lures in nice flatty catching colors and added the eyes followed by a clearcoat ,all paint and clear is acrylic lacquer

time to cut some bibs out next ,keep you postedBig smile

these guys have a different action to your normal minnows (sort of like a cruising mullet or whiting which was what i was looking for).Bib angle is not ideal its out by about two or three degrees but a slight bend in the bib will sort this for this batch ,future ones will have an amended angle

Looking awesome!
How deep will these go?

Flatties are starting to fire up, we are averaging around 14 for a half day at the moment. Some solid fish lately

Sweet spot at the depth

Unsure where you are fishing out of but we have done well with shallow diving hard bodies on the flats at around 2-3ft. So if you can make some shallows I'm sure you would do well with those too

Can't wait to see some flattie pics!

They look good to me Chris, I like the natural grey/green colour. As for depth, I like flatty lures that bump along the bottom in about 1m of water, knock em on the head, they can't resist.Thumbs Up
Cheers,

Gavin

Those look great, and the bleeding bait idea is counter intuitive I like that.

Curious what kind of action these have, and what type are you going for with the new bib style?

Just throwing this out there's a old video "vav wobbler vaapun valmistus" think its Finnish, but don't quote me. I'm sure many are familiar with it. The action is eye catching and worth considering for your flat flatheads lures. It's a way in left field thought perhaps?

My gut feeling was tight action, but based solely on the shape. Recently started experimenting with the tow points on my lures and learned loads on how it affects the action. Closer to the nose brings out the shape, whereas further away triggers a tight wiggle and less swaying. The possibilities seem endless and contradictory, just when you assume a grasp of lure physics.....your thrown for another loop.

I'm very familiar with the bib in the picture, I'm guessing its snaking at higher speeds?

no it does it slow too,its a weird set up and shouldn't work .the bib angle is ultra slack for the smallish bib perhaps having a duo snap for the tow point is the reason it works but i'm not sure.I'll make some more and try them with a omega clip and see if it still works(might go even better?LOL)

Very nice Chris, and those colors are different-- a lot like some Brazilian lure colors I have come across, they have an entirely different palate to what we are used to here.
They should work a treat, but I know what you mean about getting the bib slightly out, it sometimes drives me nuts.
Keep us posted on results.
