Hi all,
Can anyone give me a heads up on what rivers to fish for trout around the tenterfield area. I mostly fish with lures and spent my early days fishing most river and lake systems in Tassy. I had a couple of days last year around the Walcha area and had some success in the rivers and finished up with 5 nice rainbow. I was talking to a chap in a pub in Walcha and he said the rivers around Tenterfield also had trout, which is a bit closer to home (Brisbane).

Hi Dinker,
I have spent a lot of years fishing for cod around that part of the world and I have heard many people mention that there are trout in the area. But I can't honestly say that I've caught one or even really targeted them. I would suggest you maybe ring the local sport/fishing shop in Tenterfield, or consider going over to Ebor. There is a hatchery there and some excellent trout waters (which I have fished).
They are mostly small streams with a healthy population of predominantly rainbow trout.

If you are set on fishing the Tenterfield area, I would just try to focus on the small, shallow sections because any deeper waters will probably hold cod, and cod like to eat trout!!
Not much help really mate, but probably the best advice I give you is that it is worth going to a local pub, buying a few beers and asking the publican, because they always know who is catching what, and where. They can also usually put you in touch with any land owners that are open to fishermen on their properties. So, sink a few quiet ones in the name of research!!

i agree with Andy, you would be better driving an extra couple of hours and going to Ebor where you have a
much better chance of getting a fish.there are a few trout around Glen Innes but they compete with the
redfin and cod .they sometimes get trout in the river at deepwater which is about fifty k's south of tenterfield but you really need to know where to go.give us a pm if you decide to go to Ebor ,i'll put you
onto a couple of good spotsWink

At Deepwater, the locals tell me anywhere above the highway bridge for Trout, bellow the bridge for Cod.
There is a road called 10mile about 3 k's before town heading south from T/field, that leads out to some of the better water. One of the Brissie trout clubs has a shack out there somewhere.

there used to be a couple of clubs had places out there, george clarke who used to be the president of the
south east fly club had a place out there that he'd take members to occasionally, there was another club
cabin further downstream belonged to the mallard and claret club?(its been a few years since ive been out thereLOL). George did a lot of the trout stocking out there btw ,credit where credit is due
there is some crown land out at ten mile Dinker, a reserve or something where you dont need permission to fish its next to a low bridge.

They're down further at Inverell.. never caught any there but I was taught how to cast a fly there by old Bruce Thew (sp????) on the Inverell Primary School oval. They are in the Severn. They use to tell me they would go 'tickling trout' in the summer in the Severn. They reckon the warm water made the trout that dopey that you could put on a mask and a snorkle and find the trout and run your fingers along their bellies until you go to their gills at which point you'd hook them up and snag the fish on your fingers.... sounds like one of those fishy stories to me though ;)

Whilst you might find a few little pockets of them in the Inverell to Tenterfield area I would not say that they are as easy to find as in past years where stocking kept numbers high enough to produce consistant encounters. Whilst Cod do eat trout the upper reaches of the rivers are still the natural home of cod which were partly pushed out due to over fishing and the introduction of trout which eat juvinile cod and eggs so I personally would be happy to see no more stocking myself. Have you ever targeted cod on fly?

Others will probably be able to name one but I cant think of all the local lures makers any of them producing a lure to target trout which says something.
Alistair.

Darby and Puglee are on the money.

The Mallard & Claret Club, from Brisbane, were members of the New England Trout Acclimatisation Club and they stocked the top end of the Deepwater River with Rainbow Trout.

Unfortunately, the local fishing club didn't like the trout and stocked the same water with Cod and Yellowbelly.  I used to fish the top end of the Deepwater River quite a bit, when I lived at Tenterfield, and used to catch quite a few trout - they weren't huge, though.  One day, I caught a trout, cod and yellowbelly out of the same hole on the same lure - got the trifecta!  If you intend fishing the Deepwater, always ask permission from the farmers.  They used to be OK.

I also used to catch 2-3lb Rainbow trout further downstream, at Bolivia, but they seemed to disappear for some reason.  they were full of red worm, anyway.

If you intend to fish around Tenterfield, call in to the Information Centre and ask if they have a local fishing map.  I put a map together, when I was Secretary of the Tenterfield Anglers and Restocking Club, that had places along the Tenterfield Creek, Mole River, Deepwater River and Severn River (near Ballandean, Qld) where the public could get access - stock reserves and other reserves.  Apparently, they still hand out that map to travellers.

Good luck with the fishing

The trout were in the Deepwater River,  a fair way upstream from Bolivia Station - in behind Bolivia Hill.  Never saw any in the Mole or Bluff Creek.  I did a lot of fishing in the top end of the Mole and never saw any trout, even where the Deepwater River runs into it.
