How far north do Spangles go?

I've caught spangled perch right up the cape as far as the Wenlock River, about 2 thirds up the cape.

The jungle perch's natural range included as far south as the Logan and Albert Rivers and I think may also have included the Tweed River. The Qld DPI is stocking them in some of their "old" natural range but are not saying which waterways - if I have my information correct. Can anybody verify that?

Cheers Ducks, I think they want to keep it under wraps for research purposes and / or to give them a good chance of survival. But I have seen very little about the subject.

More fishing the freshwater with Wal Muffet tryingto work out the migratory habits / holding areas for the jungle perch. Some photos from the last few days. These are my photos as Wal has his on his phone and I cannot get them off my phone after he sent them to me. But Wal has been braining the sooties and jungle perch.

I tried a variety of lures and lost a Fugly Trutta Butter and a Nicho's nude silky oak prawn before I could catch a fish on them. The main lure that worked for me was the Mark A Lure in what I call an Orb Weaver Spider colour. I forget the name of it, but it was the right depth for the water I was mainly fishing, and it has a nice tight wiggle which seemed to entice the fish.

For yesterday's session alone I ended up with 3 JPs and over a dozen sooties. Wal ended up with easily over 10 JPs ans over 20 sooties. Most of the fish came from the smaller (not necessarily shallower) holes but many from the very fast flowing water beneath rapids.

The normal size for these are about 20 cm to 30 cm. I've got one that went 46 cm but I've heard of 2 others recently that went at 51 cm. I have been told where there is one that is in excess of 60 cm but that must be getting to it's upper limit and would be very rare.

a couple taylor and his mate got were 46 and 51cm (a week or so ago). his mate reckons the 51 would be 50-55 years old. even though there is a lot of them, they are slow growing and really should be released......mick

Another reef trip today, wind was supposed to have been non existant according to a weather report at 11:30 last night. Out through the river mouth and at least 25 kph with gusting another 5-10 kph. A quick couple of hits on a Headland Lure pink bibless - left some great marks. Mr Muffett got hit a few times as we trolled over reef, one hit left a tooth in his lure. Nothing much, a little spotty mack on one of Ollie's minnows.

..... OH and I got this one a Bryan Power lure - 20 to 22 kg of giant trevallyWink

That lure was massacred ...

Cheers Cliff- yes some sooties are jet black going to a light brown. The locals up at Coen prefer the lighter coloured fish - they reckon they taste better.

That GT was not bad, landed a bigger one on a Bills Bugs popper and on the same lure hooked and fought for a while a big black bastard of a GT that ended straitening both heavy duty split rings.  That fish left me in awe. The red bass were a bit of fun when the GT's wernt playing.

Had a very tough trip over in Brazil this week.
Of the ~200 odd fish I landed only 4 were on hard lures - with about a dozen on plastics and the rest on bucktail jigs.

Of the 4 - 3 were on LL member lures...
Nicho

PJ

Mark A

I threw a heap more but conditions were terrible for anything running more than a foot deep. And they were just honed in to the jigs running back right under the surface that I rarely threw anything else for long periods.

Full report later on.

A shame the conditions were hard John.
However, good to hear, it was possible to land some fish
And of course, very glad you used and proved the Banana could catch fish in the Amazon too
Thank you very much for that
