Just got back from Bali. Here are a few local lures made out of timber. Will add the makers name and details later when I find the paperwork.
The prices are on the tags in Indonesian Rupiah. The exchange rate on the day I bought these guys was 9020 rupiah to one Aussie dollar. I reckon I got a real bargain. |

Bold colours. How is the swivell attached to the the {near} middle of the lure. I presume the wire does go right through the lure. Looks nice and strong.

It's hard to tell with any certainty but it does look as though the wire goes sraight through and the swivel hangs off it.

Beautifull looking lures Paul
The construction looks like it's possibly similar to the way CaptainCranky makes his Poppers. It was amazing to watch how quickly he could rig a new one up with the lead weight, length of wire, and a swivel - if you blinked you would miss it! |

Cheers, Tony

Wire passed through and swivell attached as it is poked through the lure. Simple but effective. Thanks for clearing that up.
Finish looks great.

Ho Bob hope you're doing well. Yeah they are very nice poppers, but I couldn't get anymore last time I went back. None of the drivers seemed to know where the tackle shop was in Denpassar.

Interesting setup hey. What are we looking at on the tail end?
I guess that is the through wire put into a loop then twisted back onto its self. Excuse my ignorance on this fellas. Gordon |

Gordon it a normal wrap, then wrapped back to the loop again, cosmetic thing is my understanding of it.

Tackle shops are called
toko (shop) manching (fishing) Those poppers used to be sold as virus lures in bali. Forget the makers name, but there is a shop on the sanur by pass road, owners name is Irian Jaya, yes I know thats what west papua was called, but its his name ok, he, s a great bloke, and does good deals, call him gandut (fat) and tell dave from darwin put you on to him. there 2 other shops in denpasar itself, one is an upmarket shimano specialist store, with some other brands, and lots of shimano gear not imported to Australia, prices are fairly comparable to here, and another one, not far from that one that stocks a lot of high end jigging and popping gear, good stuff, penn, diawa etc and they talk deals, esspecially US $. Braid is dirt cheap, 600yd spool of tuff line 30lb was about 30 oz dollars, as opposed to $60 for 300 yd here. |

Thanks Dave the tackle shop I bought them from is the one with the jig sticks etc in the elevated room at the rear of the shop. I kept a business card, but after being told my more than one taxi driver (Javanese I might add) that it was gone, I threw it away. I take it they were full of it? The prices when I went there was WAY cheaper than Sydney, but I also noticed when I called through Darwin a couple of years ago that lures there were also much cheaper than Sydney so for you the prices may not be so far apart. Regardless I only bought these because they looked so good.

Rope, there are some amazing Indonsian lure makers, mainly poppers and bigger blue water stuff, but the paint work is always top notch.
The upstairs shop is always a mess, but if you dig through it, there is some really good stuff. The one on the sanur bypass, I picked up a Saltiga 4000, for $500 US, and grabbed a nice rod to go with it, of course I needed a dozon or so poppers to throw around, as well as line and terminal gear, all up $850 US, in Australia, they dont do the 4000 saltiga only the4500 so dont know the price difference, the only physical difference is the depth of the spool. The virus poppers are the best of the balinese ones ive come across so far, made of Indo white mahogany, which is where I got the idea of the tomato stakes from, Indo white mahogony! |

Yeah it was a bit of a mess. Best if you use cash too. I found a whole heap of stuff we don't get here and brought as much back as I could. These poppers appealed as they were smaller than what I normally see.
We also hired a charter for a day and cruised around Nusa Lembongan. We didn't catch much, a small dog tooth about 6 - 8 kg and a massive yellowtail kinda mackeral looking thing. Great looking water but devoid of the fish we were looking for.

I've lost the business card I had but my advice is to ask the hotel where you can find a Tackle shop. As per Davents post above they a are called toko (shop) manching (fishing). Then get the hotel to write the address down so you can show it to a driver.
Please let us know how you go |

Greetings from the newest member,
I heading to Bali and Jakarta next week. I've even somehow got myself entered into a Snakehead Fishing Tournament in Bogor (south of Jakarta). Should be interesting as I have never even seen a Snakehead, let alone have any idea of the rod, reels, lures, techniques required. Any suggestions would be most welcome. I am looking to pickup some jigs, poppers, lures, etc. during my travels. I am familiar with Adhek lures (I'll definitely be getting some of these), Bali Metal Jigs & Bali Virus Jigs. Does anyone know of any other fabricators of handmade poppers, surface lures which are made in Bali (or in Java)? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Dragma99.

Hi Dragma99
I can't say I know much about them, but I recently fished for giant snakehead in Thailand. http://www.lurelovers.com/forum/a-destination-wedding-adventure_topic19718.html And while we had fish rise and follow on the timber "jump frogs" and diving crankbaits and whatnot; without doubt the best results came on buzzbaits running flatstick across the top. Cast right in to the back of some horrid country. (Don't fish them light.) I would say definitely have a few buzzbaits in the arsenal. And strike hard. |

I've fished for snakehead in Thailand a few times now and hooked up several times but never landed one. They have a hard mouth and jump all over the place. There are many varieties as well giants down to little unassuming brown fellas living in puddles/drains along side the roads. Never be fooled these things are vicious fish, THEY BITE and lull you into a false sense of security.
All the guides and locals I'v fished with were very clear not to stop the retrieve and in all honesty I've never hooked up unless the lure was moving. In-line spinners work well as do the bladed frog patterns so popular all over Asia where they live. Good luck they are great fish. The Giant Snakeheads are ever so beautifully patterned. As for Balinese lures, just scroll up the post a bit and there is some information for you in previous posts. Ropes

Thanks Ropes & Ducks.
The Snakehead Tournament is sponsored by Mimix (a Singapore lure company). They make spinners, bladed frogs and other surface lures, as you suggested. I'm sure that they will have them on hand for sale on the day. Re the Bali Toko Mancing stores, I think I know more than the collective knowledge of the forum. If anyone wants info in the future I can probably help. Dragma99

G'day all
These are a couple of the tackle shops in Kuta & Denpessar area, Aquarius fishing tackle, Jl. Blambangan no.2, Kuta Bali - small shop weird & wonder gear. poppers etc - easy walk if you around the Kuta area. Bemo, taxi or motorbike for these ones below if you are Kuta based. Tackleshop, Jl. Imam Bonjoi no.1, Denpasar - small shop weird & wonder gear, poppers etc Puri Pancing, Jl. Diponegoro no.127, Denpasar - small shop at bottom, up market Shimano shop on top, they stock the majority of the Shimano range etc. All of the shops have different gear that would appeal to most Aussie fishos throughout Aus, cheers Balls. |

Jolly bloke, very nice fella, knows his stuff. I bought a saltiga and a popping rod from him.

Just came back from Bali in September and visited tackle shops in and around Ubud and they all had Adhek Lures. But they are not cheap anymore. Paid nearly $30AUD for GT poppers made from timber.
