G'day all!

Just wondering if anyone can help me with regards to John Turnbull's fishing book?? I have only ever heard "whispers" that it actually exists, it did get a brief mention years back on another forum, and also there is a reference to it in "Bethune on Bass", once again, extremely brief!

For all the googling I have done there is very little if any info on it at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Paul.

Had to do a double take then, that's my father in-laws name. If you end up finding more than one I'd be interested.

Paul, one of the best Sportfishing reads!! Star Printed in 1974. Along with Vics early writings, it got me inspired to go out and catch those exciting sportfish!! Plus, his wife Judy was quite pleasant on the eye!! Embarrassed Wouldn't part with it for QUIDS!!! Cheers IAN

"Bass" is its title. Findlays bible of Aussie fishing book collecting says the hardest of the 3 titles to find even though the cheapest but very well written and worthy of being in everyones collection. Cheers, Jim

Have a copy of Bass by John Turnbull in the flapper library, guess old books and old fisherman go hand in hand. Not that I am a hoarder as my wife insists. Only a small book but a good read. If I see more will get them do a fair bit of antique shops and market browsing

Paul, I've got the 1980 reprint version, if you want to have read.

Like Ian, it was this book and Vic's "Practical Fishing with Lures" that got me excited about making lures.

Cheers

Stephen Starling only did the one book in 1984 (with a later edition in 1993) For all his 22 later books he changed his name to Steve Starling Cheers, Jim

John Turnbull did a lot of magazine writing. He told it like it was and for that was not very popular amongst many of the fishing writers circles. He was still writing until the late 90's for the glossy magazine "Fishing Monthly" edited by Paul B.Kidd until that publication folded. After that I do not know what happened to him, but he was my main inspiration for when I was writing articles (and mostly for that same mag).

Great post, I too like to track down classic fishing publicatIons. I am lucky enough to own Bethune on Bass and John personally wrote a lovely note in it for me. I have Dick Lewers Bass fishing book and Vic Mcristals practical fishing with lures. I once owned Vic Mcristals freshwater fighting fish, but unfortunately lost it. Thanks again for this post. I will start looking for anything by John Turnbull.

Sorry Horrorhead

Turnbull wasn't popular for a number of reasons, he wrote for the Canberra Times for many years in an emotive and nonsensical manner.  He was extremely strongly anti-glo bugging which I helped to pioneer with jigging in the 1980's.  He used to write crap about the Eucumbene River running red with the slaughter of spawning brown trout. Would have helped if he had actually read some of the science.

My personal opinion, to which I am entitled by law, is that he was a jealous fly fishing snob. If I could find them I would get rid of my copies as he, with Chris Hole were the only Australian writers with little to recommend them.

Very interesting Frank. I only knew about his writing in the mag and, even though I knew from his pieces that he was very self opinionated, I was taken by his direct manner.

I cannot read articles that fluff about and you end up thinking - "I got nothing out of that article". Once I get into an article and find it is fluffed up, then I stop reading it and will think twice before reading stuff from that author again.
